Don’t Drink & Drive!

Community

With the long weekend upon us it’s crucial to plan ahead!

You should NEVER get behind the wheel of a motor vehicle while being impaired, or get into a vehicle with someone who is impaired.

There are so many cases when motorists are behind the wheel while being under the influence, making our roads more unsafe then ever.

On a daily basis officers across the annapolis valley respond to driving complaints, day and night, involving impairment.

In a lot of cases, due many contributing factors, those subject of the complaint are not caught.

Officers struggle regularly with placing an individual behind the wheel, resulting in those not being charged. Without enough evidence to prove someone was behind the wheel impaired, even though it seems there is sufficient evidence, many cases are dismissed in court.

Just this month I’ve heard of numerous incidents from first responders and the general public of impaired operators, reported and not reported incidents. This increase is concerning.

We all play a major role in making our roads safer, from planning a ride from a friend, taxi driver or just making the right decision to not get behind the wheel, while being impaired.

We also have the obligation to report suspected impaired drivers.

If you suspect someone may be impaired you should call 9-1-1, the operator will then connect you with the police of jurisdiction for that area.

Be prepared to provide:

• Your location, such as, a civic address, landmark or cross streets & direction of travel

• Vehicle description, such as, make and model and colour

 • License plate, if able to do so safely, provide a full license plate number

• Description of the driver, clothing description, male or female, approximate age

In 2023, 70 Canadians were charged with impaired driving causing death, and 532 charged with impaired driving causing bodily harm.

One split decision can cost someone’s life, do your part and make sure everyone arrives alive this weekend.
