Smoke visible from West Dalhousie Wildfire

Local News

⚠️ Update FROM DNR:

A hot spot at the Long Lake wildfire in West Dalhousie has flared up.

We have flown over the area, the fire is still under control, there is no immediate risk to the community.

With high temperatures, residents should expect to see more smoke again tomorrow.

The West Dalhousie / Long Lake Wildfire remains under control per the last update by DNR.

Dry and warm conditions sparked plumes of smoke from behind homes along West Dalhousie road earlier this afternoon as seen below.

Department of Natural Resources remains engaged having boots on the ground working the fire today.

The area is estimated to cover 8,468 hectares and all residents who were evacuated have returned, that were able.

Volunteer fire departments were dispatched but were stood down by DNR prior to their arrival this afternoon.

Smoke can still be seen on certain days and hot spots can continue to smolder or burn underground even when a fire is classified as “under control” which means it is no longer spreading but is not yet fully extinguished.

Our extremely dry and extensive drought this season is letting fires burn very deep and longer.

Rain is vital to helping with any wildfire across Nova Scotia right now.

Thank you to resident, Sindy Schofield of West Dalhousie for sharing this photo.
