Over the last four months, a group of grade 9 students from Summit Academy of Active Learning in Hammonds Plains, have been working to make dog beds for foster dogs!
The students who have been collectively working on the project were able to make a total of 10 different beds which will end up becoming a safe space for a variety of different rescue dogs across Nova Scotia.
Fifteen year old, Bailey Nash and her classmates crafted the idea about 8 months ago, wanting to be the voice for animals who can’t speak for themselves.
“It felt like a good accomplishment, while actually being able to produce results. It’s good to know it’s going towards a good cause, helping those who can’t ask for help themselves like animals.” Shared Bailey Nash.
The beds will end up in the care of The Relinquished Souls Animal Rescue, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing a second chance for animals.
Their mission: Our mission is to help with the rescue of dogs in overpopulated shelters, overburdened rescues, owner surrenders and abandoned dogs, vetting and re-homing them into loving homes.
Volunteer member, Trina Peterson with the Relinquished Souls Animal Rescue picked up the hand-crafted beds earlier this week in Berwick from Bailey, which will be distributed around to different foster homes.
Nash recalled how she originally connected with Peterson, reaching out several years ago wanting to start a lemonade stand to fundraise money for a rescue dog who needed help.
Even though this act of kindness may seem small, it truly shows how rewarding this act can be and how meaningful something like this is for animals who can’t speak up.
“Everyone in the organization is deeply touched by this. It’s sometimes a struggle financially to provide the support to the animals. To have someone think of the dog’s comfort is just wonderful.” Stated Peterson.
The organization is always seeking volunteers and donations to help rescues across the province. Over the last few years, their focus has been on providing homes for dogs that have been surrendered.
