Two years ago today, Hammonds Plains

Community

Two years ago today, is one in which I’ll never forget, while driving through Hammonds Plains, Halifax County.

On May 28th, two unprecedented wildfires erupted in Nova Scotia.

While one fire was already ongoing and burning unnoticed by most media in Shelburne County, another fire rapidly exploded in size, forcing thousands of residents to flee in Halifax County.

I managed to get caught up in the fire in Hammonds Plains aiding two occupants out of their burning vehicle and helping them flee the immediate area.

I still to this day cannot fully comprehend what I got myself wrapped up in, but it’s surely a miracle to think everyone escaped and there were no serious injuries as a result.

Cars were on fire, houses were on fire, people were racing to the leave the area and in some places four lanes of outbound traffic were neck and neck.

Today for many, is a grave reminder of how thankful we are for all our first responders, how dangerous wildfires can be and that coming together as a community is what keeps us strong.

Thinking of everyone today, who lives these moments like it was yesterday.

Below are photos of the chaos taken from my camera lense on May 28th, 2023 around this time.
