Community gathers as crime spikes in Kings

Community

Yesterday evening, residents from across Kings County and even neighbouring counties, gathered at the Kentville Fire Hall, to discuss the increase in crime in our communities.

There were lots of people in attendance and lots of good discussion on the matter, particularly focused on the issue around Kings.

Over the years there have been a number of community organized meetings, especially when crime has increased. The discussions are a great opportunity for residents to express their concerns, speak with the RCMP and be heard.

The Kings District RCMP along with the Kings County Council members, including members of the Policy Advisory Board were also in attendance, along with Citizens on Patrol, which is also starting back up in this area.

Citizens on Patrol has worked closely with the RCMP for a number of years before the program had fizzled out. It was a great opportunity for residents to volunteer and be involved.

My late grandfather actually contributed over 5,000 hours and over 20 years of service with the program before his passing in 2015.

There were a number of residents who spoke up, many offering thoughtful suggestions like placing trackers in vehicles, equipment and property.

There was also talk about installing increased lights around properties to enhance lighting for cameras, which is available for free through Efficiency Nova Scotia’s programs online.

Many discussed and asked questions about what they can do if someone is caught on their property or enters their home. Within reason, property owners can do whatever is necessary to protect themselves if they are in danger or feel their life is threatened.

Kings County Police Advisory Board, made up of municipal council and regular citizens is the liaison between the county and the Kings District RCMP.

The board encourages residents to attend their public meetings, which are held at county chambers, the next meeting is scheduled for May 20th at 2PM.

Attached are a few photos from the meeting along with this summary of information from yesterday evening.
