Harris joined the Halifax Regional Fire Service in 1976, climbing the ranks, before being diagnosed with what is now recognized as a firefighting-related cancer.
His role along with his wife Anne, was instrumental for pushing cancer coverage for fighters in Nova Scotia in 2003.
I had the honour to meet with Gary & Anne on a number of occasions, while working on firefighting-related cancer topics over the past year.
