From the family of Joel Neily:
It is with the heaviest hearts that we share that on Sunday, May 24th, Joel passed away peacefully at Valley Hospice, surrounded by his loving family and fellow firefighter brothers.
Over the course of his illness, Joel fought battle after battle with incredible strength, courage, and determination. Even when the odds were against him, he continued to face each day with bravery and heart. He became an inspiration to so many, not only through his fight, but through his dedication to raising awareness for firefighter safety and supporting blood cancer research so others may not have to endure the same journey.
Joel touched the lives of countless people through every part of his life — as a firefighter, a friend, a husband, a father, and a member of his community. The overwhelming love and support shown throughout this journey is a true reflection of the impact he had on so many people. He will be remembered for his strength, kindness, humour, and the way he always showed up for others.
We are forever grateful for the amazing care he received throughout this journey, especially from the compassionate staff who became like family along the way, and for the kindness, dignity, and compassion shown to him by the incredible team at Valley Hospice in his final days.
Joel was deeply loved and will be forever remembered by everyone who knew him. Above all else, he was a devoted husband and proud father who adored his daughters beyond words. He was a loving son, a cherished brother, and a loyal friend whose heart and generosity touched many. The bond he shared with his firefighter brothers was one of profound respect, loyalty, and brotherhood—an extended family he loved dearly.
As we begin to navigate this unimaginable loss, we ask that our family be given time and space to grieve privately. At a later date, we will be asking those who knew and loved Joel to come forward with stories, memories, and moments they shared with him, helping preserve Joel’s memory for his daughters so they can always know the incredible impact their father had on so many lives.
An obituary and funeral details will be shared at a later time.
Hold your loved ones close, just as Joel always reminded us to do, because tomorrow is never promised.
Forever loved. Forever missed. Never forgotten.
