Early morning fire destroys home in North Medford

Local News

Yesterday morning, shortly before 7AM, Canning firefighters were dispatched to a report of a fully involved house on fire in the community of North Medford.

Reports indicated a neighbour had called 911 advising a home was fully involved.

Automatic mutual aid protocols were dispatched bringing in mutual aid from Kentville, Port Williams, Greenwich & New Minas fire departments to the scene.

“We arrived and found a storey and a half wood-framed structure. The interior was fully involved with fire coming out of all the windows and doors of the home.” Shared Canning Fire Chief, Jeff Skaling.

First due crews quickly pulled two and a half-inch lines, working to knock heavy flames which were warming an adjacent propane tank and impinging on a nearby barn.

Firefighters were able to protect the exposures and knock the bulk of the fire down within 30 minutes, allowing crews to briefly perform an interior fire attack.

“It was a defensive operation initially. We had some crews start interior, but the structure was unstable, especially the roof.” Skaling shared.

With the home having been renovated in the past, a heavy fire in the interior and the addition of a steel roof, the crews were chasing fire for some time.

Thankfully, there was no one home at the time of the fire and there were no reported injuries as a result.

Kings District RCMP along with Nova Scotia Power also assisted on scene.

Skaling confirmed the Nova Scotia Office of the Fire Marshal was contacted, and the fire is under investigation.

The home is considered to be a total loss. Due to the steel roof, crews required an excavator to be brought in to ensure the fire was fully extinguished which resulted in the structure being torn down.

Great work by all crews on site.
