Cape Split hike in memory of 9/11 victims

Community

Canning Firefighters have hit the Cape Split trail this morning to commemorate the tragic events that unfolded in New York 25 years ago yesterday.

Over the years, firefighters across the world have found unique ways to remember those lost during 9/11.

From stair challenges, simulating the number of steps climbed in the Twin Towers, to walking the same steps on a treadmill, the Canning & District Volunteer Fire Department took the challenge from a different perspective.

“Our members organized the Cape Split walk as a memorial fundraiser. We don’t have very many buildings with stairs in our district,” shared Canning Fire Chief Jeff Skaling.

Not only is the department walking the trail, which is 6.5 kilometres, they’re fundraising for The FireSafe Foundation!

All the proceeds raised from their fundraiser walk will be donated back to the organization to support firefighting-related cancers.

Crews are very well prepared, with lots of water, and snacks, ATVs on standby and medical gear in place if required.

If you venture out to Cape Split this morning, you’ll see firefighters walking the trail and apparatus staged in the parking lot.

You are encouraged to cheer them on, leave a donation, and remember all the lives tragically taken 25 years ago.

As of this morning, they’ve raised over $3,000.00 for this important cause.

Firefighters are accepting cash donations at the Cape Split parking lot this morning as well.
