Conditions much different this time compared to last year!

One year ago yesterday, the Lake George Wildfire was reported in a remote area off a fire road in Lake George.

At this time last year, things were extremely dry. Severe drought conditions and one large fire had already severely impacted the West Dalhousie area in Annapolis County.

It was unprecedented to see fall colours and extreme fire conditions late into September.

On the afternoon of September 28th, Aylesford firefighters, Department of Natural Resources, Lake Paul Substation, Waterville, and Berwick volunteer firefighters and aircraft were quick to respond, locating the fire.

Ground crews made room for an already contracted helicopter, a Bird Dog, and four NWT 802 skimmers to make quick attacks on the fire, getting it to a point of being held.

Thankfully, four NWT Skimmers were kept on contract following the fire in West Dalhousie, providing a quick response for any fires that may have broke out across the province.

Firefighters returned to the fire at daybreak on September 29th, in an attempt to make sure the fire was under control before conditions shifted.

By afternoon, conditions began to intensify. The fire quickly spread and was reclassified as out of control.

Due to conditions, firefighters evacuated from the woods almost having their evacuation points inaccessible. All crews managed to safely retreat back to Aylesford Road, where the fire had ultimately jumped.

The fire continued to show increased fire behaviour for days to come, bringing in large Quebec water bombers, NFLD water bombers and fire crews from Ontario.

It forced road closures and multiple evacuations over a number of days.

Volunteer firefighters worked to deploy hundreds of sprinkler protection units, creating water barriers to steer the fire away from the Lake George cottage community.

For weeks, several agencies, firefighters, volunteers, pilots, and many community organizations rallied behind the effort, support was shown near and far with no loss to any structures.

Approximately 288 hectares burned and over 350 properties were evacuated as a result.

I think yesterday and today with the rain has been a blessing, even one year ago today.
