I’m providing a brief update on the Lake George Wildfire and coverage for my page.
Today is a big day in our family. My big sister is getting married, and I’m honoured to be able to photograph the special day surrounded by many of my family and friends.
My page has become much more than I have ever expected and the effort and work that goes into it absolutely consumes my everyday life.
For anyone who knows me personally, they know it’s extremely difficult for me to detach from anything, especially when it comes to breaking news in my community. There are times when you know you need to step back and realize other priorities are more important.
What does this mean?
I personally will not be available and will not be able to provide any updates on the Lake George Wildfire or anything else for that matter BUT in the meantime, I have a trusted administrator who will be.
They have been working in the shadows to support me over a number of years, while also accumulating a number of years within the fire service.
This administrator understands how important this page is to me and how my page is run, along with the expectations I have for getting information out there in a respectful and well approached manner.
They will be working to provide updates and posts in my absence when deemed necessary.
Lake George Wildfire:
Today marks one week since the Lake George Wildfire had broke out off of a new fire road. It continues to burn out of control. The current estimated size after more concise measurements is 250 hectares and still growing.
Department of Natural Resources director of fleet and forest protection, Jim Rudderham, confirmed in a recent press conference the fire was believed to have started by a person, but they are unable to determine the exact cause.
The fire was reclassified as out of control after DNR reported it was being held in a statement via X on Monday Sept 29th.
While fire conditions were not favourable yesterday, crews were able to keep their heads on a swivel and work to soak down hotspots, fight fire from fire breaks and drop water via bombers and helicopters for the majority of the day.
It was an overall better day than projected.
Continuous work to create humidity bubbles and spray down structures, lawns and vegetation were big priorities yesterday by volunteer firefighters, bringing in more fire departments than previous days.
Sprinklers for structural protection have been installed on all structures on the west side of Lake George, including the Church Camp.
Structural protection, sprinklers, were also installed yesterday on structures along Aylesford Road closest to Fox Mountain Campground.
This equipment is activated and pumping water to protect these buildings and soak down vegetation nearby.
Sprinklers have also been deployed on a number of bridges to ensure these aren’t lost.
Most of these sprinklers are directly pulling water from Lake George by pumps, while others that are not close to the lake are feeding from porter tanks supplied by tankers.
Crews continue to assess the area and are installing sprinklers on structures as deemed necessary.
There have been no reports of damaged structures or properties at this current time.
Heavy machinery continues to work to create fire breaks and assist with fire efforts.
There are 40 British Columbia Wildfire crews who arrived yesterday and are expected to begin fighting the fire today.
Weather conditions are playing a huge factor in the fire activity, which is causing challenges for crews fighting the fire.
Shifting winds, wind gusts and extremely dry conditions are all resulting in continuous strength of the fire.
The wildfire continues to burn and threaten the community of Lake George and the number of homes and cottages that stand there.
There are 353 civic addresses under the evacuation order and all evacuations and previous road closures remain in place.
Final remarks:
Feel free to send in any photos or information that might be relevant to my inbox. My administrator will be monitoring, and they will do their best to decipher the messages accordingly!
The majority of my following already know that this page is primarily run by myself only. The information shared is always done so with the intent of keeping those within my community informed.
Everyone’s kind comments and continuous support is greatly appreciated and my thoughts and prayers are with all of those in our community who remain evacuated.
We wish all those on the frontlines and in the air continued safety and success as the fire efforts continue on day 7.
Adrian J.
