Don Helpard continues his 21 year Christmas Display in Waterville

Community

For 21 consecutive years, Don Helpard has been hanging Christmas lights across his property along Maple Street in Waterville.

I’ve been able to cross paths with many people over the years, some unexpected, some planned and others well, because I had no choice!

Back when I was riding my bicycle, which was my primary means of transportation when I was a kid, I’d have no choice but to go by his house. I ended up visiting on regular basis with Don and his late wife Marilyn.

Their care and compassion for their “neighbour” was second to none and something I’m truly blessed for over the years.

Since Mr. Helpard started his Christmas display he’s managed to put over 12,000 lights on his property each holiday season.

With his late wife Marilyn playing a huge part in this venture and the reason he continues.

Unfortunately he’s not getting any younger, with being 84 and ongoing health complications, he’s had to lean on the help of neighbours and friends to put his lights up this year while downsizing a little bit from his regular display.

I’ve had the pleasure of connecting with Don out of my busy schedule, snapping a photo each year and catching up.

There are people within your community, you will never forget and those that help shape you into the person you are today.

Don is certainly one of those people.
