Don’t Drive Impaired!

Community

Don’t become another statistic, plan ahead and arrive alive.

Each year, countless lives are taken at the hands of impaired drivers.

We all play our part, whether it’s helping a friend get home safe, calling the police when you suspect someone’s impaired or planning ahead.

Every hour in Canada, an average of 9 federal criminal charges and provincial short-term licence suspensions are laid for alcohol or drug-impaired driving.

In 2023, 70 Canadians were charged with impaired driving causing death, and 532 charged with impaired driving causing bodily harm.

In many cases impaired collisions are not reported, due to occupants ditching a vehicle and leaving the scene.

Officers struggle on a daily basis to properly charge impaired driving complaints. Without specific evidence proving someone was behind the wheel, officers are unable to get a proper conviction when this is taken to court.

If you suspect someone may be impaired, call 9-1-1, the operator will connect you with the police of jurisdiction.

Be prepared to provide:

• Your location, such as, a civic address, landmark or cross streets

• Vehicle description, such as, make and model and colour

 • License plate, if able to do so safely provide a full license plate number

• Description of the driver, clothing description, male or female, approximate age

All this information helps to identify the subject of the complaint when officers are responding which will ultimately aid in the investigation.
