Heroic efforts made by locals after dolphins became stranded in the Aboiteau

Local News

Local residents came to the rescue for over 10 white-sided dolphins just outside Canning today.

It appears that approximately 12 white-sided dolphins attempted to make their way up the Canning Aboiteau before getting caught when the tide was going out.

Residents came together, venturing in deep mud, to free the marine animals and get them into the water.

The locals, who were covered in mud, managed to get the dolphins to an area where there was more water than where they previously were, in hopes of them making it for when the tide comes back in.

The Marine Animal Response Society also responded, which covers marine emergencies across the Maritimes with their thousands of volunteers.

MARS assessed the situation and also deployed a drone to get a proper count on the 12 dolphins who were stuck in the Aboiteau and check on their condition.

With hopes of the tide bringing the dolphins back into the ocean, we’re all hopeful they make it following the efforts made by many.

Around 3PM today while MARS was on scene, the dolphins were all still moving and in water.

⚠️ Update: I did get confirmation that the dolphins managed to make it back to the ocean during the incoming tide!
