FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR & BOARD OF DIRECTORS CHANGE
Nova Scotia Firefighters School Announces Leadership Transition
[Waverley, NS] — The Nova Scotia Firefighters School has announced that Executive Director John Cunningham will retire from the organization effective October 31. Mr. Cunningham has been a familiar presence at the School for many years; the Board of Directors believes that his retirement presents an opportunity to explore new and innovative directions in the best interests of the broad fire service community of Nova Scotia and beyond.
This decision comes after a period of significant public discussion about the future direction of the School. While many perspectives have been shared, one point has become clear: to rebuild confidence and ensure the School continues to meet the evolving needs of Nova Scotia’s fire service, meaningful change is required.
To that end, the School has appointed a new Board of Directors composed entirely of individuals who have not previously held management roles at the School. This leadership group is committed to a new vision – one grounded in transparency, accountability, and collaboration with all sectors of the fire service and the provincial government.
As part of the transition, the School will be restructuring the management model. The position of Executive Director will be replaced with a modernized leadership framework more reflective of today’s fire service. Close cooperation with the recently appointed Fire Training Advisory Committee will ensure the best possible model for delivering on the professional training expectations of firefighters across the province.
The Board is also taking steps to broaden representation and dialogue. Discussions are underway to include representation from IAFF locals and other key partners at the Board level. These measures are intended to ensure all voices are heard, respected, and valued as the School moves forward.
“This is an opportunity to reset and to show the fire service in Nova Scotia that the School is committed to meaningful progress,” said Mark Pound, Chair of the Board. “We are building a structure that is more transparent, more representative, and more responsive to the needs of those who depend on us for training.
The Nova Scotia Firefighters School is also pursuing partnerships to expand access to modern equipment and training opportunities, with the goal of becoming a world-class institution serving firefighters in every region of the province and beyond.
The Board extends its thanks to all members of the fire service community who have shared their concerns and ideas. The School is committed to earning trust, demonstrating accountability, and setting a new course for the future.
