Over $247,000 Raised in Fundraiser for Kings Mutual Century Centre

Community

Facilities such as the Berwick Apple Dome are the staple for many youths in our communities.

Like most arenas in Nova Scotia, including the Berwick Apple Dome, they are non-profit. This means they operate strictly to keep the rinks going, using money to keep up with operational expenses.

These facilities shape our youth, create long-time connections and ultimately bring our communities together.

Last weekend, the Berwick Apple Dome held their 22nd annual dinner and auction fundraiser, strictly raising funds for expenses and other upkeeping.

The dinner and auction alone fundraised roughly $52,000!!!

Over the past twenty-two years, volunteers have successfully fundraised over $1 million dollars to help with costs each year from their dinner and auction fundraisers.

After the Apple Dome, also known as the Kings Mutual Century Centre, was opened to the public in 2010, it became the hub for many. With expansions, including an indoor gym, curling rink, fitness centre and other important necessities, it’s an extremely vital place for the public to enjoy.

The Apple Dome is also the location of the Berwick & District Lions Club, where many functions take place. These functions include suppers, community breakfasts, dances, weddings, funerals and many other events.

With the dinner and auction being the main fundraiser, it also brought in a number of generous donations.

The Province of Nova Scotia donated a total of $75,000, while the Berwick & District Lions Club donated $25,000, Kinsman Construction of $25,000, Larrys Pharmacy of $25,000, Kentville Chrysler of $25,000 and Heartland Farm Insurance of $20,000.

In total, roughly $247,000 was fundraised in support of such a vital facility in Berwick.

The Apple Dome accepts any donations from anyone who is interested in helping with the upkeep of the facility.

“Our light bill was $185,000 just for the year of 2024 to keep the building operating.” Stated Bobby Best, the manager of the Berwick Apple Dome.

When the Apple Dome opened its doors, an electric Zamboni was purchased. With it being 16 years old this year, it’s due for replacement.

“The Zamboni is currently on order and is expected to arrive in January of 2026, costing $220,000.” Stated Best.

On average, an electric Zamboni’s life span is approximately 15–20 years. While the Berwick arena is quite busy during hockey season, this update is crucial for keeping the ice in tip-top shape for many to enjoy!

The arena is also in need of upgrades to its current compressor system, requiring a tear down, costing anywhere between $50-60,000 dollars.

The money fundraised will go back to getting both these projects completed.

Over the last 40 years, Bob Best has managed the Berwick arena and plans to continue after recently signing another 5-year contract.

Best, also a counsellor with the County of Kings, has been well known for his persistence in creating successful fundraisers for the community.

Just recently, $74,000 was funded under the direction of Best for the Cambridge & District Elementary for their new playground for the school. The Coldbrook & District Lions Club donated $50,000.

Over the weekend, Bob Best also organized a dinner and auction fundraiser for the Central Kings Safe grad, fundraising $31,000 for students for safe celebrations and the closing of their graduation in 2025.

In just the matter of a few weeks, approximately $352,000 was fundraised for many important projects locally organized by Bob.

Great work by everyone involved, including the support of the community and the organizing of such efforts. This is no small task.

These fundraisers and donations shape our communities.
