Around 830AM, on Saturday morning, Aylesford Firefighters responded to a report of a house fire in Aylesford.
Automatic mutual aid was dispatched, bringing in assistance from Berwick & Kingston fire departments.
Prior to the fire departments arrival, the occupants on one side of the home were unaware of the fire, while the other occupants managed to escape safely.
“One of our retired firefighters was driving by. Both occupants were in bed and he was able to get them out of the building before it filled with smoke,” Aylesford Fire Chief Shawn Carey stated.
Aylesford Fire arrived on scene to heavy fire showing from the exterior of a duplex.
With a quick response, crews managed to get water on the fire and knock the bulk of the fire down.
The fire managed to extend into the attic space of the structure, trapping fire and heat between the attic and the metal roof of the structure.
Fighters spent multiple hours chasing hot spots that were trapped between the metal roof and shingles.
There was significant water and smoke damage to the inside of one side of the duplex, with little damage on the other side.
Highway 1 in Aylesford was shut down for a period of time with assistance from the Kings District RCMP.
Nova Scotia Power also attended the scene, disconnecting power from the duplex.
Two firefighters were assessed by EHS Paramedics, including one of the occupants. There were no further injuries reported.
Middleton Firefighters were also called in to provide coverage at the Kingston Fire station.
Carey confirmed that the Office of the Fire Marshal was contacted and the fire is under investigation. The cause is not believed to be suspicious and is undetermined at this time.
