Significant damage to home following house fire in Lower Wolfville

Local News

Yesterday evening shortly before 10PM, Wolfville Firefighters were dispatched to a report of a house on fire in Lower Wolfville.

Initial reports indicated that a green-bin had caught fire next to a residence and the structure was now on fire.

Upon arrival of the first due officer, it was determined there was a working house fire and assistance from further fire departments was requested.

Additional pumpers and tankers were brought in from Greenwich, Port Williams & New Minas fire departments.

First due fire crews from Wolfville, made extremely quick work knocking the bulk of the fire down before mutual aid departments arrived on scene.

Some mutual aid was cleared while fire crews continued to check for extension and hot spots for sometime.

Hantsport and New Minas Fire provided stand by coverage at the Wolfville Fire Department during the incident.

King’s District RCMP along with Nova Scotia Power also attended the scene.

Three occupants were assessed by EHS Paramedics but did not require transport. Multiple pets were also in the home but were not injured.

The Canadian Red Cross was also activated to help accommodate the displaced occupants.

Wolfville Deputy Fire Chief, Chad Schrader, confirmed the cause of the fire was accidental and believed to be a result of ashes in a green-bin. The Office of the Fire Marshal was also contacted but did not attend.

There was significant damage to the back addition of the home and kitchen area, with minor smoke damage throughout the rest of the residence, shared Schrader.

It’s a great reminder of how important it is to properly dispose of your ashes no matter the time of year and how old they are, the results can be devastating.

Great work by all firefighters on scene.
