🫆Is property crime actually up?

One way for residents to truly understand if crime is up is by comparing statistics 📊

The way to measure how much crime is increased or decreased is by reporting all acts of crime to the police of jurisdiction.

On a number of occasions residents feel that reporting crimes to the police is useless, while actually reporting crime to the police can benefit for a number of reasons.

While results may not show right away, investigations, patterns and other investigative efforts can pay off months later.

Across Kings County, property crime and other acts of theft have increased considerably, compared to last year’s stats.

These statistics are reflected upon those who are willing to come forward and report crimes that have been committed in our communities.

Not all acts of theft, damages to property or even break and enters are reported to the police, reducing the numbers truly reported.

On lots of occasions many acts of theft are “crimes of opportunity” which means the crime could have been prevented by locking your doors or taking your keys out of your car.

Many victims don’t feel like reporting these incidents to police due to being blamed or ashamed of making a mistake but these crimes are just as important as bigger crimes.

Since December of 2024 and January of 2025 there were 237 reports of property crime to RCMP within Kings County. Fast forward to December of 2025 and January of 2026 that number has jumped to a total of 342 reports of property crime. These stats don’t include the town of Kentville which is policed by the Kentville Police Service.

There has also been a considerable increase in more serious crimes. Break and enters alone have jumped from 17 reports last year to a staggering 54 this year alone.

Over the last 2 weeks I’ve had the pleasure to chat with dozens of residents in our communities and work on compiling lots of research in relation to crimes locally.

It’s so important regardless of your own personal experience or thoughts, to report all acts of crime to the police of jurisdiction!
