Tuesday update on West Dalhousie / Long Lake Wildfire

Local News

There isn’t much of an update from Department of Natural Resources today, while hundreds of residents remain forced from their homes.

The West Dalhousie / Long Lake Wildfire remains out of control. The new size estimate, based on more precise measurements is 8,468 hectares.

Twenty homes and 11 outbuildings have been lost and there have been no new reports of damage since extreme fire behaviour on August 24th.

Crews made good ground over weekend. Dozer guard and lines of hose/pumps are complete along the northern end of fire, tying in that section. South end of the fire is the most active and facing drying conditions this week.

There are 10 contract helicopters in action, along with 4 planes and bird dog. Firefighters on site include 4 DNR, 61 Ontario, 40 Quebec.

Firefighters have been working in difficult conditions to soak hot spots, today there are 45 volunteer firefighters, along with about 50 pieces of heavy machinery per DNR.

The next update is expected around midday tomorrow.
