Our winter weather is certainly here, testing the patience of many motorists this December

As someone who regularly hits the roads during messy weather, for work purposes and to also obtain coverage for this page, I’ve witnessed lots over the past few weeks.

From many motorists on the roads who shouldn’t be, many collisions arise as a result of improper tires and experience, along with the added chaos due to road closures.

While I can understand the frustration of many, roads can’t become perfect right away. You have to adapt to the driving conditions and drive accordingly.

Like any job, especially public works, there are shift changes, financial restrictions, struggles and obstacles.

The job of a plow operator is thankless, working tough hours while being put in risky conditions, just to keep the roads safe for everyone else.

Due to the weather, there have been many unhappy customers, blanketing the blame on the operators who have to risk their lives, just to keep the roads safe for you!

Many operations across the province and country are dealing with staffing shortages, resulting in a reduction of trucks on the roads.

Last year I had the opportunity to get inside a provincial plow truck where I was exposed to the elements of the job and what it takes to work in such weather.

From operators having to stop regularly, working constantly around motorists, who most of the time don’t have the situation awareness to give the space for operators to work, to helping those that are stuck.

Not to mention the regular mechanical breaks that most operators have to fix on their own, unless unable. Refuelling and loading up with fresh salt and well, all of the above.

The harsher the weather, the harder the trucks work, resulting in more frequent issues. This causes breakdowns and creates more workload for other routes to cover, which requires operators to double up on plowing.

Our winter is just starting and there’s more snow and weather events to come! Please be patient, adjust to the driving conditions and give operators the space to work this winter season.

We all want to arrive home alive. Paying attention and giving yourself that extra time to get somewhere can make all the difference.

Remember, never pass a snow plow. If you can’t see their mirrors, they can’t see you. Operators are restricted in their visibility due to clearing snow. Give them lots of space!!!

Big thank you to all those who are working in whatever capacity it may be to keep our municipal and provincial roads safe this winter season.
