Close before you doze?

Community Local News

In late March, I posted a poll asking followers if they slept with their bedroom door open or closed, but it didn’t provide a lot of context!

Since this poll, there have been a number of structure fires across the Annapolis Valley, where everyone was able to escape safely.

While this one particular question may sound odd, or maybe even silly, it’s a serious question and one that could make all the difference if your home catches on fire.

These important and free fire prevention tips, could save your life in the event of a fire, when you are asleep.

It doesn’t just start with closing your doors at night or when you sleep, but it also starts by having working smoke & carbon alarms for early detection. Having escape plans so you know how to egress from your home if a fire occurs!

“Close Before You Doze” is actually a fire safety campaign led by the Fire Safety Research Institute (FSRI). It urges people to close bedroom doors while sleeping.

Their research and findings have proven that having your bedroom door closed during a fire can allow extra time for escape and give extra crucial minutes for survival in the event of a fire.

When many of us think of fires, we never expect them to happen to us, never in a million years, but when they do happen, your perspective on the matter changes.

Closing your door when you sleep is a critical safety measure, one that can save your life.

Why? Well, having your door closed in the event of a fire, slows the spread of smoke, heat, and flames.

A closed bedroom door also keeps temperatures much lower and oxygen levels higher, providing extra vital time to escape or be rescued. The closed door also acts as a barrier against toxic smoke and gases that can kill you.

From my poll in late March, there was a total of 1,505 people who clicked the options available and there was lots of discussion in the comment section!

Q: Do you sleep with your bedroom door open?

  • 53% — 787 followers — Yes I do
  • 44% — 657 followers — No I don’t
  • 5% – 061 followers — I don’t have a bedroom door

Many followers shared why they leave their door open, mainly for children, animals and to allow air flow within their homes. Others stated they leave their doors open while their children’s doors are closed!

It’s always a friendly reminder to unplug all your appliances, make sure your smoke & carbon alarms are working and have an escape plan.
