This afternoon, Kentville Firefighters were dispatched to a report of a tractor-trailer on fire in Kentville.
It was reported that a 53 foot trailer containing garbage at Valley Waste was fully involved.
Quick acting staff managed to get the trailer out of a commercial building and a safe distance away from any other immediate exposures, reducing the possibility of the fire spreading to the building. The trailer had also been detached from the tractor prior to the arrival of the fire department.
Firefighters arrived on scene to fire venting out of the top of an open trailer which contained numerous contents of garbage.
Crews made fast work connecting to nearby hydrants and getting water on the fire by using their deck gun.
Due to the amount of debris in the trailer, firefighters deployed their aerial ladder to attack the fire from above while waiting for a nearby excavator to pull out the debris.
New Minas Firefighters were also called in for mutual aid assistance on scene and to provide standby coverage at the Kentville station.
Firefighters spent some time working to ensure the fire was completely extinguished.
Kentville Fire Chief, Scott Hamilton, confirmed that staff were loading the trailer at the time of the fire and the cause of the blaze is undetermined.
One firefighter was transported to hospital for assessment and was later released.
Valley Waste was closed while the incident took place with Kentville Police Service also present on scene.
Great work by all those involved!
