Firefighters save home following Canada Day Garage fire in Greenwood

Local News

Yesterday evening at approximately 2252hrs, Kingston Firefighters were dispatched to a garage on fire in Greenwood.

Automatic protocols were requested, bringing in mutual aid from Aylesford, Middleton & Nictaux Fire departments to the scene.

Prior to the fire departments arrival, the homeowner and neighbour had made attempts to extinguish the fire and successfully removed one vehicle from the garage. Due to the fire conditions, they retreated.

It was determined that a single story garage with heavy fire involvement was fully engulfed on their arrival, with a vehicle and motorcycle and other items inside.

Residents in the area reported explosions which may have been from propane tanks in the structure. The garage was extremely close to a residential home which was also starting to catch.

Kingston Fire Chief, Troy Bruce, requested a second alarm, due to the fire load and the home already being involved, bringing in mutual aid from Berwick Fire.

First due firefighters made quick efforts to protect the home and contain the blaze, minimizing damage to the residential home.

Fire crews remained on scene for a few hours, working to ensure there was no further extension to the residence and the fire was extinguished.

Kings District RCMP along with Nova Scotia Power also attended the scene.

Paramedics transported one patient due to smoke inhalation. One other patient was assessed but not transported. There were no further injuries reported.

Additional EHS Paramedics were called and available to check firefighters due to the heat.

Kingston Fire Chief, Troy Bruce stated the fire is being treated as undetermined.
