Historic home in Hants Border consumed by fire

Local News

Just before 1PM yesterday afternoon, Hantsport Firefighters with automatic mutual aid from Windsor, Brooklyn & Wolfville, responded to a house on fire in Hants Border.

Initial reports indicated that there was a fire on the roofline of a home. Upon arrival, it was confirmed that a 3 story residential structure was involved, with heavy fire from the roof.

Firefighters made a quick interior attack before being pulled out, due to rapidly changing fire behaviour and unsafe conditions within the structure.

Two ladder trucks were deployed on both sides of the 3 story home, which required a significant amount of water. On top of water flowing from the ladder trucks, multiple working hand-lines were being used, beyond the capacity of nearby hydrants.

More manpower along with tankers from Uniacke to Berwick and in between assisted on scene, helping to contain the blaze.

Kings District RCMP also attending the scene, assisting with shutting down Highway 1 during the incident.

Nova Scotia Power and EHS Paramedics also attended. There were no reported injuries as a result of the incident.

Numerous other fire departments also assisted, providing coverage across Hants and Kings Counties during the call.

Due to the fire being an exterior attack and the amount of fire load inside the home, crews called in an excavator to assist with suppression efforts.

The home involved, was reported to have been built in the 1800s, with roots of history, it was ultimately demolished.

Our thoughts are with the community and homeowners of the property on the significant loss.
