Early this morning, New Minas firefighters were dispatched to a house fire with possible entrapment around 441AM.
The call was placed by a neighbour who had seen the blaze, unsure if the occupant had escaped.
“When we arrived on scene the building was totally involved, the fire was coming through the roof,” stated New Minas Fire Chief, Jim Redmond.
It was later reported that the homeowner was awoken by the noise of the flames and thankfully, the elderly occupant and their dog, were able to escape the fire without injury.
Firefighters faced a heavy fire load with the fire appearing to have started on the front deck of the home, but that hasn’t been confirmed, Redmond shared.
Crews were only able to perform an exterior fire attack as the home was well involved, despite the 5 minute response time by New Minas firefighters.
Kentville Fire was also dispatched as mutual aid, bringing in crews to assist with fire suppression.
Redmond was able to confirm there was no injures reported as a result of the fire.
EHS Paramedics, Nova Scotia Power & Kings District RCMP all attended the scene.
The cause of the fire is being treated as undetermined at this time as the investigation continues. The home is considered to be a total loss.
Chief Redmond was very thankful for the support of the New Minas McDonald’s for supplying 40 free meals for firefighters on scene.
