Even when you are permitted to burn, have permits and equipment in place, you should never leave any fire unattended.
Yesterday evening Waterville & District Volunteer Firefighters responded to an area of woods on fire as a result of multiple unattended brush piles.

With windy, dry and dead trees, sparks from brush piles, ignited multiple areas along a wood line, burning deep inside standing trees.

If you plan to spark up a fire, regardless of the circumstances, you should always consider the following before hand:
🔥 You should make sure burning is allowed in your area before burning and don’t burn if it’s windy!
🔥 Consider contacting your local Department of Natural Resources office for burn permits (commercial sized burns require permits to burn)
🔥 Notify your fire department that you will be conducting a control burn in the area.
🔥 You should never leave a fire unattended. Have an adequate water supply or tools, like a shovel, within reach.
💧Put the fire out, make sure it’s cold to the touch, not just out of sight, before you leave. Fires can smoulder and reignite at a later time.
Waterville Firefighters worked under the guidance of Department of Natural Resources to put the fire out before clearing yesterday evening.

Remember ↔️ Your fire. Your responsibility.
