This years harvest is by far much better then last years, plentiful!
These potatoes planted and grown in Grafton, are being harvested and transported to Frito Lay in New Minas, where they’ll be processed to make chips!
I had the opportunity to jump in the tractor with Ian and get a first hand look at how these harvesters work.
Harvesting works by using a seperate tractor and farm equipment to dig the potatoes up.
One machine will typically come through before the harvester, digging up multiple rows and then leaving the potatoes in a one neat row on the ground.
The harvester will then pick up the potatoes that were left behind while also digging up the rows that weren’t previously dug up.
During this process the potatoes go through multiple phases, being brought up with debris, the harvester will sift out dirt, rocks and other material the best it can.
The harvester holds farmhands on board who help remove any excess material before eventually being placed into a truck for transport to be processed!
Pretty neat to see this happen up close.
From being planted, grown and harvested in Grafton, these potatoes might end up in the next bag of chips you purchase at the store!
