With warmer weather arriving and asphalt plants beginning to open, Nova Scotia Department of Public Works staff were getting hands-on familiarization with milling and patch paving last week.

Crews from across the Western District came together to build their skills and refine the techniques used for this type of work.

Many people may not realize there are two different approaches to repairing potholes depending on the season: cold mix and hot mix patching.
Cold mix is a temporary material used during the winter and early spring. It remains workable in colder temperatures and allows crews to respond quickly to potholes.
Milling and patch paving is a more involved and longer-lasting repair. It includes grinding out the damaged asphalt and replacing it with hot mix, resulting in a stronger, more durable fix. This work typically requires additional equipment and traffic control.
Working on the road is challenging and carries real risk, regardless of the duration.

As crews prepare for a busy pothole season, itβs a good reminder for motorists to stay alert, slow down around work zones, and allow extra travel time.
